Like coming home: photographing mapdance
POW! What a shoot! Returning to work with mapdance always feels like coming home. Having spent years as the production manager and technical manager for this exceptional company from the University of Chichester, I was thrilled to be entrusted with capturing the essence of this year’s cohort as their photographer. (See above a few shots)
This shoot was an opportunity to showcase the talent and passion of the dancers while highlighting the unique selling point of mapdance: its size. As a repertory dance company, mapdance stands out with a large group of 14 performers, something increasingly rare in the current touring landscape.
A Legacy of upcoming Talent and Collaboration
One of the great strengths of mapdance is its collaboration with guest choreographers. This year’s cohort has had the privilege of working with renowned artists like Ceyda Tanc, Rhiannon Faith, and Luke Brown, to name just a few. Capturing the unique energy of each piece while honouring the choreographers' vision was both a challenge and a joy.
Luke Brown, a long standing great friend, who also serves as the rehearsal director for the 2024-25 season, brought an electrifying energy to the studio, and his support was instrumental throughout the day. His ability to bring out the best in the dancers made my role that much easier—and more inspiring. Plus we had an amazing time, who said work had to be a slog?!

Challenges and Approach
Every photoshoot comes with its own hurdles. Here are some of the key challenges I faced and how I approached them:
Unison in a Large
GroupCapturing a group of 14 dancers moving in perfect unison is no small feat. Add to that the dynamic, high-energy jumps and intricate formations, and timing becomes everything. For shots like these, I relied heavily on the dancers’ rehearsed segments, ensuring we got the perfect shot without exhausting them with multiple retakes.
Finding Iconic Moments
A dance photo can become a poster, a promotional image, or even a defining moment for the company. It’s about anticipating the right perspective that turns movement into art. This takes an understanding of choreography, lighting, and the energy of the dancers.
Time Management
With multiple works to shoot and limited hours in the studio, there’s no room for error—or missed moments. Every second counts, especially when working under the pressures of today’s tighter schedules.
Preparing the Space
Care. Dance studios are not designed for photography. Fire escapes, extinguishers, and mirrors are great for safety but less so for a polished photo. Dressing the space beforehand was essential. A tidier studio makes an enormous difference, creating the backdrop these dancers deserve.
Supporting Students and Their Work
At mike b designs, I offer a range of photography and videography services designed to support creatives at every stage of their journey. My work with mapdance extends beyond professional shoots. I’m also proud to mentor and supervise students, offering guidance and placements that help build their confidence and skills in the arts industry.
Students have the unique opportunity to hire me for a student-rate filming session (email me to find out more), where I capture high-resolution videography or photography of their work for showreels and digital CVs. This unedited footage provides an affordable, professional foundation for launching their careers. It’s an invaluable resource for showcasing their talent to potential employers or collaborators. See work with Hattie Musgrove a former Dance student, who is now very sought after in her field and a wonderful mover!

A High-Energy Experience
This *mapdance* shoot was filled with passion and vitality, both from the dancers and behind the camera. From framing high-energy jumps to capturing quiet, emotive moments, the day was a whirlwind of creativity and collaboration. I’ve already started editing a few of the images, but I’m looking forward to delving deeper into the process and bringing these incredible moments to life.
Working with mapdance again reminded me of why I fell in love with this company and its ethos. Their dedication to the art of dance and the collaborative energy of their performers is unparalleled. I can’t wait to see what’s next for this sensational group, and I’m honoured to have played a part in showcasing their journey.
